Thanks for that fine article, Helen. A new generation of pro-democracy student activists in China is very good news! I'd kind of realized that young Chinese students didn't know very much about the disasters of communism, due to CCP censorship. But I hadn't connected that to why Chinese exchange students were attacking the Hong Kong and other protesters in foreign universities. But as you say, they just didn't know better (though it's still wrong to beat people up you disagree with). They had a misplaced blind faith in the CCP.
But now, the students have experienced the CCP's draconian Covid lockdowns first-hand. And see how oppressive the CCP is, even without knowing about the Tiananmen Square massacre. The students have finally woken up to what the CCP is about. And between that realization and the students' poor job prospects, thanks to the CCP's tanking the economy, lies a real threat to the CCP's authority and power.
I'm glad the Xi and the CCP is facing these headaches. And I hope they get much worse. Good for those brave students. I hope the protests snowball and result in more freedom for the Chinese people. It's always good when they question the CCP's moral authority because it keeps the CCP off-balance.
