Conditional Compassion
The Left can be especially cruel to conservative members of a minority group.
Except for my first book, "Confucius Never Said," I rarely write about my personal life, even rare on publicly sharing about any painful personal experience. My parents taught me that there is dignity in enduring one's suffering in silence, away from the public's prying eyes. As a writer, I also had the rule of staying away from writing long essays. Writing is already a time-consuming endeavor sometimes, not to mention writing something long. Also, who has the time to read it?
Recently, I broke both rules. First, I wrote an extended essay for the Manhattan Institute's City Journal. Second, it is about a painful personal experience; more accurately, it is about when a painful personal experience collided with politics. I decided to share it publicly in this form now because I have seen what had happened to me continues to happen to other conservative minorities. I hope that by sharing my experience, more people will speak up, and together, we can build a truly tolerant and compassionate…
