Many condemned Hamas’ actions as barbaric. But if you read the organization’s 2017 statement of “General Principles and Policies,” you may be shocked by its progressive language. In the document, Hamas claims Israel is a “Zionist project” founded by “racist, aggressive, colonial, and expansionist.” If this language and this way of framing and justification sound familiar, it is because Western leftist intellectuals invented and perpetuated it.

Starting with Karl Marx, western leftist intellectuals have promoted a one-dimensional worldview: the world comprises oppressors and oppressed. The oppressed are encouraged to launch revolutions to overthrow the oppressors in the old world and establish a new world. While Marx divided the oppressors and the oppressed based on economic classes, his intellectual heirs added new dimensions. Anyone deemed a colonist, settler, or racist is an oppressor. Anyone who represents “whiteness,” whether in skin color or shared beliefs, is an oppressor. Every conflict, every piece of history, and every single current event is judged or presented through the lens of oppressors vs. oppressed.
