Frustrated by our nation’s unprecedented border crisis due to the Biden administration’s open border policy, the Republican governors of Florida and Texas have been sending illegal immigrants from their states to sanctuary jurisdictions such as New York and Washington, D.C., for more than a year now. I initially didn’t think it was a good idea because I believed that using migrants as political pawns would only fuel more accusations of the GOP being the anti-immigrant party and wouldn’t do much to motivate the public, especially Democratic voters, to support a commonsense-based immigration reform.
But I started to check my assumptions when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sent a plane of 50 illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, one of the wealthiest communities and a self-proclaimed sanctuary city. Visitors to the city will see many signs like this.
Yet, when 50 illegal immigrants showed up at these elites’ doorsteps, the elites declared a humanitarian crisis in their town. Within 48 hours, the city shipped all illegal immigrants out of their community with the assistance of the National Guard. Liberal media, lefty pundits, and Democratic politicians accused Governor DeSantis of using immigrants in a political stunt, which was probably true. But Gov. DeSantis’ action exposed the hypocrisy of the “sanctuary” jurisdiction movement, and the pathetic reactions of the wealthy residents at Martha’s Vineyard have turned many Americans off.
For today’s liberals, in the words of WSJ columnist Dan Henninger, “downside consequences seem irrelevant to them” when they advocate for social policies as long as they are not affected.
