Biden's Capitulation to China's "Hostage Diplomacy" Endangers All of Us
President Biden's acquiesce damaged the U.S. credibility with allies and the reputation of the U.S. being a rule of law nation.
The U.S. Department of Justice agreed to set free Meng Wanzhou, a senior executive of China’s telecom giant Huawei. The Canadian government initially detained Meng on behalf of the U.S. in 2018. As Meng was on her way back to China, two Canadian hostages China had held since Meng’s arrest were on their way back to Canada. While we should celebrate the Canadian hostages’ reunion with their loved ones, we should not pretend that Meng’s release is anything but the Biden administration’s capitulation to Beijing’s hostage diplomacy. Such acquiescence will have disastrous long-term implications.
Meng is the chief financial officer of Huawei and the daughter of the company’s founder Ren Zhengfei. Huawei is reportedly has a deep tie with China’s state, intelligence agencies, and the People’s Liberation Army. Beijing has been actively pushing other countries to use Huawei to build their 5G network and even made very public threats against those governments that chose not to rely on the Chinese…
